A couple of topics for discussion.
Did you enter Gallery Idol? What do you think of the chosen 20, and who doesn't deserve to be there? Who would have been in your top 20? Is it a case of who you know and how popular you are already?
Have any of the peeks from PTI tempted you? Will you be ordering on release night or are you going to wait for the limited edition set on the 23rd?
Let's smack!
do you have a link?
ReplyDeleteSorry, here is is Gallery Idol
ReplyDeleteand here are PTI Releases
ReplyDeleteFor me, 2,7,9,10,16,18 and 19 are all meh, not inspired at all.
ReplyDeleteLike someone else said on Smack Center unless you go CAS you won't get picked, I see they have a token embellishment heavy card.
I really think it's about who you know and how popular you are.
I think as a whole, PC did a good job with their choices. I am bummed not to have been chosen, but I didn't have time to really go for it. Too busy with CHA preparations!
ReplyDeleteI entered it with about 6 cards but didn't put enough research into it. What I mean is: Paper Crafts does CAS, they do shabby, and then some in-between.. I don't know exactly how my style fits in there (i've been pubbed by them a few times and more with CARDS) and I knew that if I was to be a contender I would have to change my style to meet their criteria.. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing to cater your style for different companies - we all do it for DTs - but if you wanted to make it into the TOP 20 you had to have THE perfect card to catch Susan's eye.. what that was? I don't know...
ReplyDeleteI like every card in the top 20.. Most of them were not my style, but very nice.
while I like all the cards, some of them were not special enough -- #19 is a great card, but not top 20 calibur for example. there isn't anything particularly inspired or different or clever about it. but I like Laurie's work, so whatever.
ReplyDeletePTI's july release? not sure. probably nothing. the clothesline set is cute, but Pink Persimmon already has one and I want to compare them.
oh and get rid of the comment verification on this blog or i am out of here.
ReplyDeleteseriously.
I LUV melissa phillips blog, but she is not posting often recently. I've seen many wannabe shabby cardmakers (Cherrys Jubilee, Danielle therese, etc), but none that do it tasteful like she does. I think my second bet might be Iralamija.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know more cardmakers who can pile on a load and not make it look UGLY?
yes please remove comment verification!
ReplyDeleteI think Kristii Lockart was the only one out of the 20 picked who really DESERVED gallery idol top 20. 8:59, she's one good shabby cardmaker like MP.
ReplyDeleteWell, I need some real pictures from PTI, but I'm sure that I'll be getting the Friendship Jar fillers. Other than that... I have no idea.
ReplyDeleteEven *I* have to word verify?! WTF, I'm logged in! Ugh, get rid of that, seriously.
ReplyDeleteI really love the tulips and hydrangea fillers, I just don't want the rest of the sets.
ReplyDeleteI too love the flower fillers but have no need for the other stamps. I like the look of the clothesline, I just need to see the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for removing WV
i do not like the PTI sneaks. I stopped buying from them because of their bad business practices. I only like Betsy Veldman and Melissa Phillips, the rest of the DT including Nichole needs to go.
ReplyDeleteBut see that's the problem, every time I think I'm safe Besty goes and does something with a set I passed up and makes it amazing. She's gold for that team, for one, and for two, I hate her with a passion now. Why do I need an ice cream stamp?!
ReplyDeletei don't even look at PTI stuff anymore, though i do still follow pine & betsy's blogs...i will not shop there for anything anymore, so what's the point
ReplyDeletei'm not bummed that i wasn't chosen for gallery idol, my entries weren't good enough, i knew it going in...but i'm not really impressed with the top 20 either
ReplyDeletePTI releases, any releases for that matter that only give you a "peek" of a minute corner of something annoy the shit out of me, do not build up excitement, and only ensure that I will not be looking at them again anytime soon. (I have only ever bought paper from PTI).
ReplyDeleteCard choices: 2 is way basic, can't see how it got chosen at all. The one that looks like an RV with a banner on top of the card, that got smakced by me over at the smack center, cannot believe it got chosen either. I really like the first one and a number of the others.
Ones i'm like WTF? 2, 7, 9, 15, 19, 20.
And why are those idiots wearing those feather boas???????????/
From the smack blog:
ReplyDeleteLisa Johnson is one of the worst dt members. Years ago she was involved in stealing another designers work and I haven't liked her since.

Y'all know anything about this? I don't like her work and hate PTI so I'd love to smack both at once! :)
I posted this on the other smack blog, but they are all kinds of obsessed with some Dana person. BORING!

Spellbinders posted their Day 5 CHA peeks. I really like the projects Michelle did. The box was really cute -again with the edger dies a MUST have for me.
Christine's card was ok, but that box thing she made is a hot mess.

I haven't heard anything about this scandal.
Liked 6, 8, 12, and 17 the best. The others ones are all "meh". Lindsay (1) deserves to be there, but I liked another card that she posted in the gallery even better. Kind of an "Up" theme with a house floating away with button balloons as a "congrats on your move".
ReplyDeleteI really hope that people will vote for designers in the the next round according to talent and creativity, and that it doesn't turn into a popularity contest!
ReplyDeleteAnyone else thing Heather Nichols is just phoning it in for her PTI release projects? Nothing inspiring at all! http://pinefeather.typepad.com/pine_is_here/
ReplyDeleteLove the box die, a definate purchase for me, I am not a big buyer of edger dies as I like my punches but I do ike the thought of them taking up less storeage space.
ReplyDeleteLisa Johnson - do tell!
Heather Nichols, yup, phoning it in for sure, what an uninspiring card.
I too liked the Up style card better.
Damn you Betsy, you are PTI's best weapon for making me want to purchase something I didn't think I'd want.

NOT going to happen.
And to be honest, you don't even have to be the most popular. You just have to have enough ppl vote for you. Last year's winner did just that. There was all sorts of outrage about her winning, but if you can get the votes, then you shall win.
I said it on the other blog, the top 20 are picked by PC... HENCE the drastic proportion of CAS cards. Susan loves them. She tweets CAS cards, she pins CAS cards, she PUBLISHES CAS cards. The end.
They have their token shabby designers, and they rotate them in and out every year.
Betsy is just a force to be reckoned with. Nobody can argue that's she's one of the best out there.
--------------------------------------
The first couple of months it was HARD not to buy any PTI stuff. But now that it's been a while, I'm just not missing them.
If I was buying anything this release it would be the Congratulations set. I like the jars, but I don't stamp enough to use them.
The Gallery Idol Top 20 are posted.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.papercraftsmag.com/contests/gallery-idol-2011
I remember flicking through PC mag and saw the winner of Gallery Idol and thought the cards were nothing special.
ReplyDeleteI have a question. One of the cards last year was a lawnmower and the sentiment was 'I Lawn For You' I am still trying to work out what the heck that means, does anyone know and can clue me in?
Hang on here it is
http://www.papercraftsconnection.com/blog/2010/06/freebie-friday-gallery-idol-top-10/
It didn't show the mow and mow in the magazine. I guess it's supposed to be 'I long for you, more and more?'
What a stupid sentiment!
ReplyDeleteHere is her blog http://cadnileb.blogspot.com/
I really don't think they are anything special, and she won Gallery Idol?????
I was shocked when Belinda won last year too.
ReplyDeleteI'm a scrapbooker not a card maker, so I don't know the "who's who" in the card making world, I just know what I like and what IMO is original, well designed, thoughtfully put together and has good attention to detail.
ReplyDeleteIn the original Top 20 I liked Meg Craig, Cathy Fonjoyo, Jennifer Rzasa and Amy Wanford
The girls who really stood out in this next round of voting were Jaclyn Miller - damn those red sneakers are super cute!! - Meg Craig and Amy Wanford... so I will be keeping my eye on those girls to see if they are consistent from week to week.
Just my 2 cents worth ;o)
So, what do we think of round one? These are just *my* opinions :)
ReplyDelete#1 - Not to my taste but looks ike she put effort into it (making the brad etc) Not sure I would wear the pin.
#2 - Nice use of fabric but looks like it was taken with a soft focus filter!
#3 - Clean looking and fresh colours
#4 - Not my style at all, me no likey.
#5 - A bit disappointed with Kristi's card, not as good as her original entry and for some reason the Teddy doesn't 'sit' right with me
#6 - I am not a fan of wire work
#7 - I actually like the rocket, it's also very popular right now
#8 - It's pretty but looks like it was very quick to make compared with the others so far.
#9 - I really don't like the painted edges, but that's my persona preferance
#10 - Even though I don't like the paint I quite like this one, I think the butterfly would have looked nicer if she had rubbed some ink or other medium over it to bring out the detail more.
#11 - CAS but very simple to make, maybe that's because it's the sort of card OC likes? (even though I know it's a public vote)
#12 - The flowers are cute but whether it's the light, i don't know but the red and yellow don't seem to be the right shade with the aqua
#13 - CAS again but not for me
#14 - When she says handmade, has she not just cut out printables or did she make the printables?
#15 - Ok, CAS but my favourite so far, I like that she used the ends instead of the whole pencil like you usualy see
#16 - Cute, I know I said I didn't like wirework but I really like the shadowing, it gives it that ittle bit extra
#17 - The flowers are very pretty but the sentiment gets lost
#18 - Ooh, I like this one too, the colours and the embellishment
#19 - I understand that this was a 'surprise' to her but unfortunately i think it will be to her detriment
#20 - It's nice but I don't like the shapes of the popsicle and ice cream, they look too big.
So for me it's either 15 or 18 but on the whole I wasn't really 'wowed' by any of them.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Wholy cow, sorry about that, don't blame you if you TL;DR!
ReplyDeleteI think 15 - Amy Wanford's is my favourite too
ReplyDeleteLOL - I would say TLDR but I found myself reading it anyway.
ReplyDeleteI loved the bike card with the shadow, so cute. The tennis shoes really showed creativity though.
I voted for the bike card. That wire work was amazing, and made for a very intricate and cool "do it yourself embellishment". The sunshine design with the cool shadow put it over the top for me. She truly kept with the theme of the week. The rocket card was my second choice, it was cute and a creatively made handmade embellie. Sawing off pencils, while a cool concept for a card, isn't really a creatively-made embellishment.
ReplyDeleteI definitely overused the word "cool" in that post, sorry!
ReplyDeleteanybody here can point me to shabby chic designer besides Melissa Phillip? I liked her work, but need more inspirations beside just the one. I cannot find using google search. All the others I see is Clean and simple work.
ReplyDeleteooh. Gallery Idol is dying a slow and painful death; I find NOTHING INSPIRING in all the entries. I shall not vote for any of them.
ReplyDeleteSmackers, shall we boycott the GI 2010?

I wasnt blown away by the top 20 - nothing new (but then again its hard now to be new and interesting, as we've kinda seen it all before)
